TALIMUS LS contains Tacrolimus which belongs to the group of medicines called immunosuppressants. It is used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and in children (2 years of age and older), who are not adequately responsive for conventional therapies like topical corticosteroids. It can also be used as a maintenance therapy, for the prevention of flares and prolongation of flare-free intervals in patients having a high frequency of disease exacerbations (4 or more times/year) who had an initial response up to 6 weeks of treatment. Tacrolimus binds to an intracellular protein called FK binding protein-12. The tacrolimus-FK binding protein-12 complex inhibits the activity of calcineurin (a calcium-dependent phosphatase transmitting chemical), which in turn, reduces the activity of T-lymphocytes in the immune system. As a result, the T-cells fail to release their cytokines that cause inflammation, redness and itching.
